BarCamp is an international network of user generated conferences — open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants. “RE” BarCamp takes the traditional conference model usually focusing on early-stage web applications, and related open source technologies, social protocols, and open data formats, and focusing in on real estate technology and trends.
Why is is callled BarCamp?
The name “BarCamp” is a playful allusion to the event’s origins, with reference to the hacker slang term, foobar: BarCamp arose as a spin-off of Foo Camp, an annual invitation-only participant driven conference hosted by open source publishing luminary Tim O’Reilly.
Who Organizes the Event?
BarCamps are organized and evangelized largely through the web, harnessing what might be called a Web 2.0 communications toolkit. Anyone can initiate a BarCamp, using the BarCamp wiki.
The procedural framework consists of sessions proposed and scheduled each day by attendees, mostly on-site, typically using white boards or paper taped to the wall. This has been dubbed, with another play on words, The Open Grid approach.
How Does it Work?
Attendees must give a demo, a session, or help with one, or otherwise volunteer / contribute in some way to support the event. All presentations are scheduled the day they happen. Prepare in advance, but come early to get a slot on the wall. The people present at the event will select the demos or presentations they want to see.
Presenters are responsible for making sure that notes/slides/audio/video of their presentations are published on the web for the benefit of all and those who can’t be present.
Are there any rules?
1st Rule: You do talk about BarCamp.
2nd Rule: You do blog about BarCamp.
3rd Rule: If you want to present, you must write your topic and name in a presentation slot.
4th Rule: Only three word intros.
5th Rule: As many presentations at a time as facilities allow for.
6th Rule: No pre-scheduled presentations, no tourists.
7th Rule: Presentations will go on as long as they have to or until they run into another presentation slot.
8th Rule: If this is your first time at BarCamp, you HAVE to present. (Ok, you don’t really HAVE to, but try to find someone to present with, or at least ask questions and be an interactive participant.)
Where Will REBarcamp Houston Take Place?
29955 Interstate 45 North.
The Shenandoah Convention & Meeting Facility
(1 Exit Past The Woodlands Mall)
What Are The Hours?
We will have a short keynote at 9 a.m. and then attendees will have an hour to plan conference topics and sessions. Some sessions may be repeated in the afternoon. There will be an hour lunch with boxed lunches provided. There will be an opportunity to gather in the evening. If there are enough sponsors we may provide a beer and wine reception in the evening, if not, we’ll just gather as a group somewhere on The Woodlands Waterway, where there is no shortage of great locations.

The event will start at 9 am and end at 6. there will be a gathering afterward as well, if we get enough sponsors, we will do beer and wine at the event hall, if not we will move the gathering somewhere on the waterway. There’s no reason you couldn’t attend just the afternoon sessions, other than just missing out on the good stuff in the A.M.
Look forward to seeing you there.
